Karen Williams Smith
Karen Williams Smith is a self taught doll artist whose natural talents allowed her to master sculpting the human form. Her compositions showcase a keen awareness of positive and negative space and the eye moves over them in a way that imparts a dynamic quality to the piece. Her works do not have moving parts, so she considers them to be realistic figurative sculpture. She started out by making small figures from dough and expanded her repertoire to include other media and sizes, so now produces pieces from 2 to 28 inches in polymer clay and metal. Her work is oriented towards detail rather than scale, so her favored size of around 12 inches strikes a balance in that it is delicate and feminine in scale but large enough for her to lavish her talents on facial features and expressions.
